Bridgewater State University, a public university, was established in 1840 as Bridgewater Normal School by Horace Mann. All of the normal schools were renamed to State Normal Schools in 1845 as a result of state legislation. The first facility for what would later become Bridgewater State Normal School was inaugurated in 1846.
