In Claremont, California, there is a private liberal arts college called Pitzer College. Russell K. Pitzer founded the college as a women’s college in 1963. 153 students and 11 professors made up the university’s first class, which was enrolled in 1964. The following year saw the first graduation.
The college became a coeducational institution in 1970. The first African American president of one of the five Claremont Colleges, Melvin L. Oliver, took office in 2016.
According to the college, one of its goals is to provide a liberal arts education that will enable students to participate responsibly in the global community. Within the Claremont Colleges property, which is home to 7 higher education institutions making up the Claremont University Consortium, the college campus occupies about 35 acres.
There are 16 buildings on the campus. There are five residential halls available, three of which are Gold LEED-certified (Pitzer, Atherton, and Sanborn Halls), and the other two are Platinum. With the exception of the Grove House, which was relocated to the site in 1977, the bulk of the structures on the campus are examples of contemporary architecture.
Other notable buildings on campus include the McConnell Center, which houses the main dining hall, the George C. S. Benson Auditorium, the Stephen L. Glass Commencement Plaza, the John R. Rodman Arboretum, and the Keck Science Complex II.
The college also manages the 145-acre Firestone Center for Restoration Ecology, which is near Playa Dominical in Costa Rica. Pomona College and Pitzer both participate in the same athletic program. As participants in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, their teams compete in NCAA Division III.
Their mascot is known as Cecil the Sagehen, and their team colors are blue and orange.
There are 42 majors and 22 minors available at the college. Through one of the 58 study exchange programs the college offers, students may complete a portion of their coursework at partner institutions domestically or overseas. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges has granted it accreditation.
