Hendrix College is a private liberal arts college that is located in Conway City, Arkansas State in the United States. It accommodates students from various religious and cultural backgrounds while being associated with the United Methodist Church since 1884.
Hendrix began as Central Institute, a primary school in Altus City, Arkansas, when it was founded by the Rev. Isham L. Burrow in 1876.
The Central Institute became the Central Collegiate Institute in 1881 after the addition of secondary and collegiate departments.
In 1884, the Central Collegiate Institute was purchased by the United Methodist Church. In honor of the Rev. Eugene Russell Hendrix, the bishop chair of the three Arkansas Methodist conferences, the institute was called Hendrix College four years later. In 1890, Hendrix moved to its current location in Conway. It was anticipated that Hendrix will transfer again to Little Rock City in Arkansas, however, Conway was able to successfully gather 150,000$ finance to retain the college there.
A second attempt to alter the name to Trinity College was made in 1930, but this time the students and alumni insisted on preserving the Hendrix name.
