One of Middlebury College’s schools is the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Under the name Monterey Institute for Foreign Studies, it was founded in 1955. Six years later, the school relocated to its current site. The institute was the first to provide a master’s in environmental policy in 1997.
A cooperation agreement between the institute and Middlebury College, which was signed in 2005, stipulated that the institute’s board of trustees should be reformed to include 13 members, four of whom should be former board members of the Monterey Institute and the remaining eight from Middlebury.
Five years after the arrangement was made, Middlebury College acquired the institute and merged it into its graduate program. In 2015, the institute’s name was changed to its current one as part of a strategy to rebrand the institutions connected to Middlebury College.
There are 19 buildings on the institute site, each with unique amenities. Several notable structures can be found on campus, including Roderick House, 4-PLex Residential Hall, Morse Building, Holland Center, Simoneau House, Kinnoull House, Segal Building, William Tell Coleman Library, Lara Soto Adobe, Samson Student Center, CNS Building, Craig Building, IIRC Building, and Mcgowan Building. White and blue are the university’s official colors.
There are 11 master’s degree-granting academic programs offered by the institute. Four other combined degree programs award master’s degrees in addition to MBA, MPA, or bachelor’s degrees. Through the Winter Practica, students have the opportunity to travel to Chile, Nepal, Peru, El Salvador, and other countries to practice their language there.
The New England Association of Schools & Colleges has granted the institute its accreditation. It has three specialized research institutes, including the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, the largest nongovernmental organization (NGO) in the world battling the spread of WMDs through five research initiatives.
