In 1945, Schillinger House became Berklee College of Music. Lawrence Berk, an MIT alumnus who is also a pianist, composer, and arranger, founded it. Berk founded the first institution in the nation teaching jazz, which was the most popular music at the time, because he believed in the importance of music education.
