In Los Angeles, California, there is a private liberal arts college called Occidental College (Oxy). Thomas Bard, Lyman Stewart, and James George Bell founded the college in 1887. The next year, the college’s inaugural class began with 13 female and 27 male students.
The college moved to the former St. Vincent’s College campus in 1896 after a fire destroyed its previous structure. Two years later, the college opened a new campus with three buildings in Highland Park. Pomona College offered to join the college in 1909, but the request was rejected. The college severed its links with the Presbyterian Church the next year.
The college began construction on the current site in the Eagle Rock district in 1912. By creating the Students Army Training Corps, the college joined World War I in 1917. A Navy V-12[22] officer training program was started on campus during World War II and ended in 1945.
The college started its Upward Bound programs in 1966 with the intention of assisting low-income students in enrolling in college. Students protested in various ways in 1969 against American involvement in Southeast Asia.
The campus was named the sixth most beautiful campus in the country by Newsweek in 2012. The NCAA Division III and SCIAC are where the collegiate sports teams, also known as Tigers, compete. Black alongside orange is the school’s color.
The College of Occidental offers 34 majors and 9 minors. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges has accredited Occidental.
