La Sierra University, sometimes known as La Sierra or LSU, is a non-profit co-educational college in Riverside, California. The Adventist Church created La Sierra Academy in 1922, when Willits J. Hole, an American industrialist and real estate tycoon from Southern California, donated 300 acres of land near Riverside to the Southeastern California Conference, one of the Adventist Church councils.
As a result of its expansion in giving courses to potential teachers, the name of La Sierra Academy was changed twice in 1927, first to La Sierra Academy and Normal School and later to Southern California Junior College. La Sierra College was renamed again in 1939.
After being split off from the rest of the high school, the area was given the name La Sierra College Preparatory School. It is now known as La Sierra Academy and is situated close to the university. In 1946, La Sierra College received approval to operate as a four-year institution of liberal arts education.
The Loma Linda University College of Arts and Sciences, which was created in 1967 as a result of the union of La Sierra College and Loma Linda University, was later divided into two separate institutions of higher learning in 1990.
As a result, La Sierra University was given as the new name for the La Sierra campus. A businessman bought 200 acres of the La Sierra campus in 2000, which had previously been utilized for agriculture and a dairy, with the intention of transforming it into Riverwalk.
In addition to its Riverside Campus, La Sierra maintains an additional extended campus in Lacombe, Alberta, Canada, that grants a Master of Arts in Education.
The Frances E. Barnard Memorial Observatory, which is situated behind the campus, was built in memory of Marion Cecil Barnard’s mother Frances Evelyn Barnard, who donated funds for the observatory’s construction and the acquisition of two telescopes for the school.
La Sierra has been named by U.S. News and World Report as the best university in the western part of the country for the last five years in a row.
More than 70 minors and 24 majors are available for undergraduate degrees at La Sierra. In addition to certain adult evening and online programs, it also offers six graduate degrees in more than 30 areas.
