The New York Film Academy (NYFA) is a private, for-profit institution of higher learning. Jerry Sherlock founded the institution in 1992. Before moving to the former Tammany Hall building in Union Square, the academy had its offices at the Tribeca Film Center.
The institution and NBC News cooperated in 2007 to offer a broadcast journalism curriculum. The academy kept running the curriculum three years after the contract’s expiration. The academy began a number of collaborations with important art institutions and museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, and Whitney Museum, in the same year to host youth filmmaking and cultural activities.
In 2015, the academy moved once more, this time to Battery Place in New York City. According to the academy, its goal is to spread visual literacy and visual storytelling through intense instruction and hands-on training. The institution has three campuses: one each in Miami Beach, Florida; Burbank, California; and New York City, New York.
The Battery Place headquarters plus a second building in the Financial District make up the New York campus. The school also has a number of satellite locations throughout the globe that provide summer programs and workshops. The Gold Coast in Australia, Walt Disney World in Florida, the Aljazeera Media Training and Development Center in Doha, Qatar, and Harvard University are among the notable sites.
In addition to ESL programs, the institution provides academic programs in 14 other subjects. It awards associate, bachelor, and master’s degrees in the fine and performing arts. The National Association of Schools of Art and Design has accredited the academy.
The academy makes an effort to entice faculty members who are actively engaged in the video game and film industries or who are lecturing at famous institutions that are relevant to these fields. Directors Claude Kerven and Lynda Goodfriend, as well as game designer Chris Swain, are prominent faculty members.
