Azusa Pacific University began in the most basic of ways. The men and women who stepped up to build a center for Christian education did so because of their commitment. The institution was founded as a Training School for Christian Workers in Whittier, California, in 1899, making it the first Bible college in the area.

It was renamed Azusa Pacific Institution in 1981, and it now functions as a private university with its headquarters in Azusa, California.
