What is Bethune Cookman University All About

Mary McLeod Bethune’s efforts resulted in the establishment of Bethune Cookman University, a historically black college, in 1904. With only five students to instruct, founder Bethune opened the Daytona Literary and Industrial Training School for black girls. Sincerely committed to her goal of providing instruction, the institute quickly prospered.

By 1925, it had fully amalgamated with the Cookman Institute of Jacksonville to become Daytona-Cookman Collegiate Institute. It had previously been known as the Daytona Educational and Industrial Institute.

After that, it developed gradually into a university, and the name was changed to include “Bethune” in honor of its founder from 1931. It is connected to the United Methodist Church and has its headquarters in Daytona Beach, Florida.

As the first African American to lead a government agency, Negro Affairs, Bethune’s dedication to her mission ultimately led to her selection. The institute moved in the right path and developed a large number of leaders under Bethune’s management. One of these was Oswald P. Bronson, a graduate who also served as the university’s president for 29 years and was subsequently designated president emeritus.

Student life at Bethune Cookman University is a special blend of enjoyment, creativity, and a commitment to God and religion. There is a university chaplain who acts as a resource for staff and students seeking help in their religion and spirituality.

Additionally, there are chapel services, organizations for religious life, and religious gatherings that control religion and spirituality on campus. There is a council for empowering victims of domestic violence as well as a center for civic engagement.

The institution also has a performing arts center that presents artistic acts for the general public as well as the university, ranging from Broadway shows to symphonies. The university also fields ‘Wildcats’ sporting teams, which compete in NCAA Division I.

More than 35 Bachelor’s programs and six Master’s programs are offered through the university’s 12 schools and colleges. The Carl S. Swisher Library is one of its most notable facilities.
