What Is The History Behind Barry University?

The Most Reverend Patrick Barry, Bishop of St. Augustine, and Reverend Mother M. Gerald Barry, brother and sister united in the mission to provide education for women, founded Barry University, a private Catholic institute with headquarters in Miami Shores, Florida.

After deciding to construct a higher education facility, the land for the facility was bought in 1939, and the institution started offering classes a year later, in 1940.

The institution has always had the good fortune to enjoy support from those who have made significant contributions to its advancement. The institute was largely influenced and formed by Reverend Monsignor William Barry and former city mayor John Graves Thompson.

Barry University now has 17 campuses spread all across Florida, up from just one.

At Barry University, student life is a singular experience that combines intellectual immersion with culture, the arts, experiences, and activities in a welcoming and pleasant setting.

On campus, there are more than 60 clubs and student associations that are not only active on campus but actively search for possibilities to be involved in activities off campus. Activities that promote positivity and serve the community include participating in initiatives to end hunger or homelessness or developing organic farming.

There are distinctive recreational opportunities, and students can join sports teams that compete in the NCAA Division II and Sunshine State Conference (SSC). But there are also bowling and archery. Students participate in bringing innovative performances since arts are more than just educational pursuits.

Additionally, the university features a shield that combines the coats of arms of the Dominican Order and Bishop Patrick Barry. The school’s colors are silver, red, and black.

With more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree program options, the university offers a wide range of academic programs. There are also study abroad programs offered in 28 other nations worldwide.

Ellen Whiteside McDonnell School of Social Work, Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law, Frank J. Rooney School of Professional and Career Education, together with two more departments, are some of its standout divisions.
